Parade with Paws Against Domestic Violence
Branches Domestic Violence Shelter was established as a non-profit agency in 1980. Branches works to empower the increasing number of domestic violence victims and their families to break the cycle of domestic violence in our area. Aside from providing emergency housing; Branches offers legal assistance, individual & group counseling, and case management to ready our clients to become independent. Currently Branches has one operational emergency housing shelter and four outreach offices located in adjoining counties; Mason, Putnam, Wayne, & Lincoln, to provide additional resources. ALL of Branches’ services are free of charge. Branches served over 1,200 victims in 2015.
Dear Future Partner,
Every nine minutes in West Virginia someone is calling a domestic violence hotline reaching out for help. In 2010 alone, more than 14,000 domestic violence cases were filed in West Virginia Family Court. The problems are compounded for victims with pets. According to the American Humane Association, 71% of pet owners entering domestic violence shelters report that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or to psychologically control victims.
You may feel like those are rather staggering statistics, but those are the reasons that our employees come to work each day. In 2015, Branches helped over 1,200 victims through some of the toughest times in their lives.
Statistics show there is an established link between domestic violence and animal abuse. The Putnam County STOP Team is coordinating an event in the hope of not only raising awareness to these two individual traumatic situations, but also how each affects the other. To do this, we are encouraging the community to take part in a 1- mile walk with their pets. Additionally, we will be having the local animal shelter present with dogs that can be walked for free and potentially adopted. Information on services provided by Branches will also be available.
Helping victims in West Virginia is something t
hat Branches is very passionate about, but it is also something that can become very expensive. All of the services provided at our shelter are completely free to those in need. As there is no cost, help from the community in the form of monetary and in-kind donations continues to help Branches strive to get victims back on their feet. Without the help of people like you, making the difference in the life of a domestic violence victim can be nearly impossible.
Enclosed in this packet you will find many different, and equally important, ways to help those in need. We would love for you to become a part of our first Parade with Paws Against Domestic Violence.
All of the money that is raised by this event will be used to further help victims in West Virginia with housing, legal assistance, individual & group counseling, case management and so much more.
We hope you can join us. For more information please contact Branches at (304) 586-3865. If you would like to sponsor please return by September 30th.
We look forward to working with you,
